WASHINGTON DC- In a high-stakes security operation, US President Donald Trump was secretly smuggled out of Turkey using an airport catering truck following a credible Iranian threat during last month’s NATO summit in Ankara.
While cameras captured the president publicly boarding the legacy Air Force One, he was quietly moved off the aircraft and onto a smaller military jet, leaving journalists and parts of the White House staff entirely unaware.
The Daring Clandestine Maneuver in Ankara
The unusual deception unfolded on July 8 as President Trump prepared to depart from the Turkish capital. Earlier in the trip, the president had arrived aboard a luxury Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar—a $400 million aircraft that the US administration has spent months retrofitting.
However, security apprehensions surrounding the newer plane's defensive capabilities, combined with urgent intelligence regarding a potential Iranian missile plot or assassination attempt, prompted the US Secret Service to enact an alternative extraction strategy.
Publicly, Trump announced that he would fly home on the older legacy Air Force One model "for old time's sake," telling observers he wanted to give military personnel at a British base a chance to tour the new Qatari-donated jet. Media cameras filmed the president stepping out of a limousine and climbing the exterior stairs into the legacy Boeing 747.
Behind the scenes, however, a covert operation was underway. According to reports from the Washington Post and corroborating details from CBS News, an elevated airport catering truck was positioned on the opposite side of the aircraft out of public view.
Trump was transferred into the vehicle's enclosed container via hydraulic lift, which then drove away from the main presidential transport to a waiting C-32A military aircraft—a modified Boeing 757 typically reserved for the vice president.
Decoy Flight and Unwitting Press Corps
While the president boarded the discreet military transport, the legacy Air Force One served as an airborne decoy.
Traveling journalists and select White House aides boarded the rear of the aircraft, instructed to keep their window shades firmly closed.
Completely unaware that the commander-in-chief was no longer on board, the press corps flew to Royal Air Force Mildenhall in England.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly boarded the C-32A through external stairs separately to maintain an aura of normalcy for the secondary flight.
Scrutiny Over the Qatari-Gifted Aircraft
Upon landing in the UK, Trump visibly re-emerged from the legacy Boeing 747 to greet onlookers, masking the logistics of the secret transfer. He subsequently boarded the luxury Qatari-donated jet to complete his journey back to Washington.
During the transatlantic flight, Trump addressed reporters regarding ongoing security threats, noting his awareness of hostile actors targeting him.
Asked about the directive requiring journalists to lower their window shades, Trump remarked: "Because you're probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleazebags we have to deal with," adding that he faces constant threats and is considered a prime target by Tehran.
White House representatives have declined to explicitly confirm the catering truck maneuver, but press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the structural readiness of the new fleet.
"The new Air Force One is perfectly safe for the President's travels, but will receive additional upgrades and enhancements in the fall which will take approximately one month to complete," Leavitt stated.
