U.S. Secretary of State Criticizes U.N., Calls for Reform of Global Institutions
Munich, February 14, 2026 – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the United Nations on Saturday for playing “virtually no role” in resolving global conflicts and called for reforms in international institutions.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said the U.N. still holds “tremendous potential” to be a positive force in the world.
“The United Nations still has tremendous potential to be a tool for good in the world. But we cannot ignore that, today, on the most pressing matters before us, it has no answers and has played virtually no role. It could not solve the war in Gaza,” Rubio stated.
Uncertainty Over Russia’s Commitment to Ukraine Peace
Rubio also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, which is approaching its fifth year, expressing skepticism about Russia’s commitment to peace.
“We don’t know if the Russians are serious about ending the war,” he said, as Washington continues to push for a swift resolution.

Emphasizing the importance of transatlantic relations, Rubio said the United States aims to revitalize, not separate from, its alliance with Europe.
“We do not seek to separate, but to revitalize an old friendship and renew the greatest civilization in human history. What we want is a reinvigorated alliance,” he added.
