US Launches Retaliatory Air Strikes on Iran Following Drone Attack on Cargo Ship

US Launches Retaliatory Air Strikes on Iran Following Drone Attack on Cargo Ship

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States military has launched a series of targeted air strikes against Iranian military assets, following what President Donald Trump labeled a "foolish violation" of the newly established ceasefire agreement after a commercial cargo ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation occurred on Friday after a Singapore-flagged container vessel, the Ever Lovely, was struck by a one-way attack drone on Thursday while navigating a recommended international shipping lane near Oman's port of Dahit.

While the ship's owner, Evergreen, confirmed that the vessel, its cargo, and all crew members were safe, the incident shattered a brief period of diplomatic optimism.

Direct Kinetic Response from US Central Command

In a swift response, US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed on Friday that American forces hit several Iranian military positions, targeting drone and missile storage facilities alongside coastal radar stations. Centcom characterized the operations as a "powerful response" to Tehran's maritime aggression.

"The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire," Centcom stated, emphasizing that Iran's actions directly undermine the freedom of navigation in a vital international trade corridor.

The military command added that it would continue coordinating safe passage for commercial ships transiting the strategic chokepoint.

Before the strikes were officially announced, President Trump teased the imminent military action at the White House.

When questioned by reporters on Friday afternoon about a potential response to the drone strike, Trump remarked, "You'll find out," adding, "I don't like the fact that they took a shot yesterday. They shouldn't be doing that."

    Tenuous Ceasefire Under Strain

The sudden eruption of violence threatens to derail a fragile 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the US and Iran on June 17, which aimed to bring a formal end to the war that began in late February.

A cornerstone of that agreement required Iran to ensure the unhindered, toll-free passage of commercial shipping vessels through the Strait of Hormuz for a 60-day window.

Following the retaliatory strikes, US Vice President JD Vance issued a stern warning to Tehran on social media, writing that if Iran has grievances regarding the application of the MoU, "they can pick up the phone." However, Vance cautioned, "violence will be met with violence."

Dispute Over Shipping Lanes and Tolls

The drone attack comes amid growing friction over how the Strait of Hormuz will be policed moving forward. Prior to the attack, US officials insisted peace talks were moving smoothly, with Trump claiming Iran had agreed there would be "no tolls, no insurance costs, and no other charges of any kind" levied on transit ships.

However, mixed signals have emerged from Tehran. While Omani mediators have pushed for toll-free access, Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, recently told state media that "the administration of the Strait of Hormuz will never go back to the way it was before the war."

    Humanitarian Operations Halted

The fallout from the drone strike has already had immediate civilian consequences. In light of the renewed hostilities, the United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced it has temporarily suspended a massive, highly anticipated humanitarian operation meant to safely evacuate more than 11,000 sailors who have been stranded in the conflict zone since the war initially broke out.

Iran has not yet officially commented on the US air strikes, and it remains uncertain whether the American operation was a standalone retaliatory measure or the beginning of a broader campaign.
