US Sets June Deadline for Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal
Feb 7, 2026— In a significant shift in diplomatic efforts, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that the United States is pushing for a definitive end to the war with Russia by June 2026.
The announcement follows the conclusion of a second round of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi and comes as Ukraine struggles with a devastated energy grid following a new wave of Russian strikes.
New Diplomatic Push: Miami Talks Scheduled
President Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday that Washington has invited both Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams to meet in the United States next week, with Miami being the likely host city.
Timeline: The U.S. has reportedly set a June deadline to finalize an agreement.
Motivation: Zelenskyy suggested that U.S. domestic issues and the approaching summer are driving the urgency from the Trump administration.
Trilateral Focus: For the first time, discussions have moved toward a potential meeting between the heads of state rather than just representatives.
Despite the move toward U.S.-based talks, Zelenskyy cautioned that "difficult issues remain difficult," particularly regarding territorial concessions and security guarantees. Russia continues to demand full control of the Donbas region, a condition Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.
Grid on the Brink: Massive Strikes Cause Blackouts
While diplomats talk, the reality on the ground remains grim. On Friday night, Russia launched a massive assault involving over 400 drones and 40 missiles, specifically targeting Ukraine's "power backbone."
"Russian criminals carried out another massive attack on Ukraine's energy facilities," stated Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.
The strikes hit several key facilities, including:
The Dobrotvir Power Plant (Lviv region)
The Burshtyn Power Plant (Ivano-Frankivsk region)
Critical Substations across four regions.
DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, reported this as the 10th massive attack on its facilities since October 2025.
The resulting power deficit has forced Ukraine to request emergency electricity supplies from neighboring Poland.
Assassination Accusations and Rising Tolls
Tensions at the negotiating table have been further strained by a high-profile shooting in Moscow.
Lavrov claimed the attack was a deliberate attempt to derail the peace process, though he provided no evidence for the claim.
In a rare disclosure of military losses, Zelenskyy stated earlier this week that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since February 2022.
