UN Rights Chief Demands Accountability Over Deadly U.S. Strike on Iranian School

UN Rights Chief Demands Accountability Over Deadly U.S. Strike on Iranian School

The United Nations’ top human rights official has issued a stern call for the United States to expedite and publicize the results of its investigation into a catastrophic missile strike on an Iranian primary school.

The incident, which occurred during the opening hours of the conflict last month, has become a flashpoint for international condemnation.

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab as a "visceral horror." Speaking during an emergency debate at the UN Human Rights Council, Türk emphasized that transparency is non-negotiable.

"There must be justice for the terrible harm done," Türk stated. "The onus is on those who carried out the attack to investigate it promptly, impartially, transparently, and thoroughly."

    A Tragedy in Two Strikes

The assault on the girls' elementary school reportedly involved two missiles fired in rapid succession. Iranian authorities confirmed that at least 168 people were killed, including approximately 110 children.

If U.S. involvement is officially confirmed, the Minab disaster would rank among the deadliest instances of civilian casualties resulting from American military action in decades.

    Intelligence Failure or Deliberate Act?

While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has labeled the strike a "deliberate and intentional" war crime, reports from within the U.S. suggest a catastrophic intelligence failure.

According to sources cited by The New York Times, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) may have used outdated coordinates provided by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

The school building was reportedly once part of an adjacent Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) base, which appeared to be the actual intended target.

Expert analysis of video footage from the scene identifies the weapon used as a Tomahawk cruise missile—a sophisticated piece of hardware currently missing from the arsenals of both Israel and Iran, pointing directly toward U.S. naval or air assets.

    Political Pressure Mounts in Washington

In the United States, the Biden-Trump transition period and the leadership of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are under intense scrutiny. Nearly every Democrat in the U.S. Senate has signed a letter demanding a detailed account of the rules of engagement used during the operation.

The letter specifically questions whether Secretary Hegseth’s previous vow to scrap "stupid rules of engagement" led to a relaxation of protocols designed to protect civilian life. While the Pentagon maintains that it does not target non-combatants, it has yet to provide a formal timeline for the conclusion of the probe.

    The Human Cost of War

Satellite imagery and on-the-ground photos from Minab show a scene of utter devastation: bombed-out classrooms reduced to rubble and personal items of students scattered among the debris.

"The images showed clearly who pays the highest price for war," Türk remarked. "Civilians with no power in the decisions that led to conflict."

As the April 6 deadline for a potential escalation in the regional energy war nears, the pressure on Washington to provide "unambiguous accountability" for the Minab tragedy continues to grow, both at home and on the global stage.
