Teacher-Journalists Face Crisis Over MPO Policy
Around 3,500 district-level journalists who are also engaged in teaching have fallen into serious uncertainty following the issuance of the Ministry of Education’s new MPO Policy 2025.
The policy, released on 7 December, clearly states that teachers or staff members under the MPO system are prohibited from holding multiple jobs at the same time. It specifically bars involvement in journalism or other income-generating professions, including legal practice. Any violation of this rule may result in the cancellation of MPO benefits.
The decision has triggered widespread dissatisfaction among teacher-journalists across the country. According to sources from the newly formed MPO-Enlisted Teacher-Journalist Group, affected individuals are preparing to challenge the policy in the High Court through a writ petition.

শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ের নতুন এমপিও নীতিমালা-২০২৫ জারির পর শিক্ষকতার পাশাপাশি সাংবাদিকতায় যুক্ত থাকা দেশের প্রায় সাড়ে তিন হাজার মফস্বল সাংবাদিক গভীর অনিশ্চয়তার মুখে পড়েছেন।
গত ৭ ডিসেম্বর প্রকাশিত নীতিমালায় বলা হয়েছে, এমপিওভুক্ত কোনো শিক্ষক বা কর্মচারী একাধিক পেশায় যুক্ত থাকতে পারবেন না। সাংবাদিকতা কিংবা আইন পেশার মতো আয়ের সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্মকাণ্ডে যুক্ত থাকলেও তা নিষিদ্ধ করা হয়েছে। এ নিয়ম ভঙ্গ করলে সংশ্লিষ্ট ব্যক্তির এমপিও সুবিধা বাতিলের বিধান রাখা হয়েছে।
এই সিদ্ধান্তে দেশজুড়ে শিক্ষক-সাংবাদিকদের মধ্যে ব্যাপক অসন্তোষ সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। নবগঠিত ‘এমপিওভুক্ত শিক্ষক-সাংবাদিক গ্রুপ’-এর সূত্রে জানা গেছে, তারা নীতিমালাটির বিরুদ্ধে উচ্চ আদালতে রিট দায়েরের প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন।
