Rapid Rescue: Schoolboy Saved Within 75 Minutes After Direct Intervention by Bangladesh PM
In a high-stakes rescue that has gripped the capital, a ninth-grade student was safely recovered from kidnappers within just 75 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, following a direct order from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The swift operation took place at an underconstruction building in Dhaka's Khilgaon area, ending a harrowing ordeal for the family of a government employee.
A Father’s Desperate Plea
The incident began on Tuesday afternoon when the victim’s father, Khandaker Shamim—an employee of the Ministry of Information—received news that his son had been abducted.
Overwhelmed with grief and desperation, Shamim, who was at the Secretariat at the time, rushed to the Prime Minister’s Office.
In a rare and dramatic encounter, he managed to reach Prime Minister Tarique Rahman just as the leader was departing the premises.
Upon hearing the frantic father's account of the kidnapping, the Prime Minister immediately halted his departure to personally coordinate the response.
Direct Prime Ministerial Command
Witnesses report that the Prime Minister immediately contacted Masud Alam, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He issued a stern directive to mobilize all necessary resources and rescue the boy without delay.
"Following the Prime Minister’s instruction at approximately 3:45 PM, we launched an immediate tactical operation," DC Masud Alam told reporters. "The urgency of the command set a rapid pace for our intelligence and field units."
The Abduction and Tactical Recovery
The student, a pupil at the National Laboratory Ideal School in Khilgaon, was intercepted by a group of four to five individuals shortly after leaving school at 2:30 PM. The captors forcibly took him to a seven-story unfinished building near the Jorpukur area in capital Dhaka.
According to police, the kidnappers physically assaulted the boy and demanded a ransom of 50,000 BDT from his father, threatening his life if the payment was not met.
The police utilized a sophisticated "negotiation and track" strategy:
The Bait: Undercover officers contacted the kidnappers, pretending to agree to the ransom payment to keep them engaged.
Technological Tracking: While negotiating the payment details and stalling for time, police units successfully triangulated the kidnappers' location.
The Sweep: Sensing the approaching police dragnet, the abductors abandoned the boy and fled the scene.
By 5:00 PM, barely an hour and a quarter after the Prime Minister’s intervention, police stormed the building and found the student unharmed.
Focus on Law and Order
The successful rescue has been hailed as a significant victory for the Dhaka police, highlighting the impact of rapid response and high-level accountability. While the victim is now reunited with his family, police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects involved in the gang.
This incident has sparked a wider conversation regarding the safety of students in urban areas and the government's "zero-tolerance" policy toward kidnapping and extortion in 2026.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Tarique Rahman was sworn in as prime minister on February 17 following his party’s landslide victory, a political changeover that came after the toppling of the Awami League government amid a serious student movement, prompting former premier Sheikh Hasina to take shelter in India on August 5, 2024.
