In a major win for the Democratic Party, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani is projected to become the next mayor of New York City, making him the city’s youngest ever mayor and its first Muslim to hold the role. He leads independent former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mr. Mamdani’s surge comes as Democrats also appear on track to capture governor’s seats in Virginia and New Jersey — the first electoral test of President Donald Trump’s second term. Trump had warned he would cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won.
Meanwhile, in the western U.S., Californians are voting on measures to redraw the state’s congressional districts in a bid to favour the Democratic Party ahead of next year’s elections.
