Jamaat District Ameer Detained at Saidpur Airport with Large Sum of Cash
Feb 11, 2026: Police detained a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari on Tuesday after recovering a substantial amount of cash (around Tk 50 lakh) from his possession on the eve of voting.
The detainee has been identified as Belal Uddin, Ameer of Thakurgaon district Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to law enforcement officials, he was taken into custody shortly after arriving from Dhaka on a domestic flight.
Nilphamari Superintendent of Police Sheikh Zahidul Islam confirmed the development on Wednesday afternoon. He said the suspect claimed that the amount in his possession exceeded Tk 50 lakh (approximately half a crore taka).
However, the money is still being officially counted in the presence of relevant authorities to determine the exact figure.
Police sources said the operation was conducted based on confidential information. After Belal Uddin landed at Saidpur Airport on a NovoAir flight, officers searched his luggage and recovered the cash.
Officer-in-Charge of Saidpur Police Station Abdus Sattar confirmed that legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed the source of the money or its intended use.
The detention comes at a politically sensitive time, as it occurred just a day before voting in the area. Police said further investigation is ongoing.
