Political tensions have escalated across the country following growing demands to ban the Awami League, with accusations of authoritarian rule and involvement in terrorist activities.
Various political parties, organizations, and members of the public have raised their voices, urging the government to take action. In response, the government has stated that the demand is being taken seriously.
In an official statement issued on Friday (May 9), the government confirmed that consultations have already begun with political parties regarding the matter. A decision on banning the Awami League will be made soon, following discussions.
The government also noted that recent reports from the United Nations regarding alleged acts of terrorism by Awami League leaders and supporters are being considered in the evaluation process.
To maintain order and uphold democratic norms, the government has called for patience and restraint from all sides.
The statement further revealed that, respecting public demand, the student wing known as Chhatra League has already been banned under existing laws as a recognized terrorist organization. Additionally, the government is moving to amend the International Crimes Tribunal Act to take legal action against organizations linked to crimes against humanity.
The government also acknowledged public outrage over the recent departure abroad of former Awami League President and murder case accused Abdul Hamid.
Authorities have pledged that appropriate legal measures will be taken against all individuals involved in that incident.
