French Astronaut Sophie Adenot Launches to ISS on SpaceX Crew Mission
Feb 14, 2024: Four astronauts blasted off to the International Space Station (ISS) early Friday aboard a SpaceX rocket, marking the start of a new long-duration mission that will restore the orbiting laboratory to full staffing.
The launch was carried out by NASA in partnership with SpaceX under the Crew-12 rotation mission. The team lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida aboard a Falcon 9 rocket topped with the Crew Dragon capsule named Freedom.
The pre-dawn departure had been postponed for two days due to unfavorable weather conditions along the US East Coast. With the new crew now en route, the ISS will return to normal operations following a recent early medical evacuation — the first such event in the station’s history.
Second French Woman in Space
Among the four-member team is French astronaut Sophie Adenot, who becomes only the second woman from France to travel into space, following the trail set by Claudie Haigneré.
Adenot is joined by NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, as well as Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. The diverse crew reflects ongoing international cooperation aboard the ISS despite broader geopolitical tensions on Earth.
In a statement of support, Haigneré praised Adenot’s journey, describing her as both a successor and a pioneer for the next generation of European space explorers.
Packed Scientific Agenda in Orbit
During her planned nine-month stay, Adenot will participate in more than 200 scientific experiments. Her research will focus on how microgravity affects the human body, including studies on memory, physiology and long-term adaptation to space conditions.
The mission could also see her set a new record for the longest stay in orbit by a French astronaut.
Beyond research duties, Adenot will undergo extensive training and assist with maintenance tasks aboard the ISS, which serves as a hub for international scientific collaboration.
A Taste of France in Space
Although the mission schedule is demanding, Adenot will have a taste of home while in orbit. Celebrated French chef Anne-Sophie Pic has prepared a selection of specially packaged gourmet meals for the astronaut, including lobster bisque and foie gras.
The curated menu will accompany Adenot during key moments of her mission, including her 44th birthday in July.
Message of Unity from Orbit
Crew commander Jessica Meir shared brief remarks from space shortly after launch, emphasizing the perspective astronauts gain when viewing Earth from above.
She reflected on the interconnected nature of humanity, noting that despite leaving the planet physically, astronauts remain deeply aware of their connection to it.
The European Space Agency has described Adenot’s participation as a symbol of both national achievement and broader European unity in space exploration.
As Crew-12 makes its journey toward docking with the ISS, the mission highlights continued international cooperation in scientific research and human spaceflight — even as political divisions persist on Earth.
