Five Types of Vehicles Banned from Roads on Election Day in Bangladesh
February 10, 2026 — Ahead of the national referendum and the 13th parliamentary election, the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has imposed restrictions on the movement of certain vehicles across the country.
According to EC guidelines, starting from midnight Wednesday, taxicabs, pickups, microbuses, and trucks will be prohibited from operating nationwide. The restrictions will remain in effect until midnight on Thursday, the day of voting.
Additionally, motorcycles will be banned from midnight Tuesday until midnight Friday, except for those carrying official EC stickers, which are allowed to operate.
Exemptions for Emergency and Official Vehicles
The EC has clarified that the restrictions do not apply to law enforcement, armed forces, government officials, or authorized election observers. Vehicles used for emergency services, including medical supplies, health services, and newspaper deliveries, will also be allowed.
Vehicles transporting family members to and from airports for flights, with valid tickets or proof of travel, are exempt. Similarly, vehicles transporting long-distance passengers or traveling for local commuting purposes will be permitted.
Vehicles for Election Purposes
Candidates and their election agents are allowed one vehicle each (such as cars, jeeps, or microbuses), with prior approval from the Returning Officer and display of EC-issued stickers. Journalists, observers, and other personnel involved in election duties can also operate vehicles and motorcycles with proper EC or Returning Officer authorization.
The EC has also exempted telecommunication service vehicles, as recognized emergency services, and vehicles operating on national highways, ports, inter-district roads, and main urban thoroughfares necessary for essential travel.

Election expert Md. Abdul Alim told Prothom Alo that voters will be allowed to travel in personal cars to cast their votes.
