Earthquake of 5.4 Magnitude Felt Across Bangladesh, Epicenter in Satkhira District
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook several parts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, on Friday afternoon, according to meteorological authorities.
The tremor was felt at around 1:52 PM local time and lasted for several seconds, causing panic among residents in multiple regions. The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Ashashuni Upazila of Satkhira District, approximately 188 kilometers from the meteorological monitoring station in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Officials from the earthquake observation center of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that the magnitude of the quake was recorded at 5.4 on the Richter scale. However, the United States Geological Survey measured the intensity slightly lower at 5.3.
Experts described the quake as moderate in strength. Former professor Humayun Akhtar of the Department of Geology at University of Dhaka said the tremor was felt in two successive phases. He also confirmed that the epicenter was in the Satkhira region.
Local residents in the affected areas reported strong shaking, with many people rushing out of buildings in fear. No major damage or casualties were immediately reported.
Earlier this week, another earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude was felt in parts of Bangladesh. That tremor was centered in Myanmar.
Authorities said the earthquake-prone zones in southwestern Bangladesh are generally considered low-risk compared to other seismic regions, and there is currently no cause for serious concern, though residents are advised to stay alert during seismic activity.
Further monitoring is underway as officials continue to assess the situation.
