Driver Holds Joint Secretary Hostage for Money
A shocking incident unfolded in Dhaka when a government driver held a Joint Secretary of the Planning Commission hostage inside her official vehicle and demanded money for several hours.
The victim, Maksuda Hossain, a Joint Secretary at the Planning Commission, was confined inside her own government car for nearly four hours, from Wednesday morning until noon (17 December). The accused driver, Abdul Awal (40), allegedly demanded Tk 600,000, claiming it was needed for his mother’s medical treatment.
According to the victim, she left her Dhanmondi residence around 8:15 am for her office at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. When the car reached near the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Center, the driver diverted the vehicle instead of heading toward the Planning Commission.
Despite repeated questions, the driver did not respond and continued driving through Bijoy Sarani, Mohakhali, Banani, and Airport Road. Realizing she was being taken elsewhere, the Joint Secretary informed one of her colleagues about the situation.
When she attempted to call the national emergency number 999, the driver forcibly snatched her phone, turned it off, and locked the car doors. He then drove through Uttara, Diabari, the embankment road, and Hemayetpur in Savar, before roaming various parts of the city.
Around noon, the driver stopped the car near the former Trade Fair ground and demanded Tk 600,000, initially asking for Tk 50,000 immediately. Ms. Hossain told him she had no cash at the moment and said the money could be arranged after reaching the office.
He then drove into the Planning Commission premises, where law enforcement personnel detained him. The driver was later handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, and preparations are underway to file a kidnapping case, confirmed Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam.
The driver had been assigned to Ms. Hossain for about two months and had previously worked for another Joint Secretary. Planning Division Secretary Shakil Akhter stated that the driver is suspected to be a drug user and attempted to extort money by intimidating the official. Police have been instructed to take strict legal action.
চালকের হাতে জিম্মি যুগ্ম সচিব
ঢাকায় এক চাঞ্চল্যকর ঘটনায় পরিকল্পনা কমিশনের এক যুগ্ম সচিবকে তার নিজের সরকারি গাড়ির ভেতরে প্রায় চার ঘণ্টা জিম্মি করে রেখে ৬ লাখ টাকা দাবি করেছেন ওই গাড়ির চালক।
ভুক্তভোগী যুগ্ম সচিবের নাম মাকসুদা হোসেন। অভিযুক্ত চালক আবদুল আউয়াল (৪০)। বুধবার (১৭ ডিসেম্বর) সকাল থেকে দুপুর পর্যন্ত এ ঘটনা ঘটে।
মাকসুদা হোসেন জানান, সকাল ৮টা ১৫ মিনিটে ধানমন্ডির বাসা থেকে তিনি সরকারি গাড়িতে করে শেরেবাংলা নগরে পরিকল্পনা কমিশনে নিজ কর্মস্থলের উদ্দেশে রওনা দেন। গাড়িটি চীন মৈত্রী সম্মেলন কেন্দ্রের সামনে পৌঁছালে চালক হঠাৎ করে কমিশনের দিকে না গিয়ে অন্যদিকে গাড়ি ঘোরান।
তিনি বারবার কারণ জানতে চাইলে চালক কোনো উত্তর না দিয়ে বিজয় সরণি, মহাখালী, বনানী হয়ে বিমানবন্দর সড়কের দিকে গাড়ি চালাতে থাকেন। বিষয়টি বুঝতে পেরে তিনি এক সহকর্মীকে বিষয়টি জানান।
একপর্যায়ে জাতীয় জরুরি সেবা ৯৯৯-এ ফোন দিতে গেলে চালক জোরপূর্বক তার মোবাইল ফোন কেড়ে নিয়ে বন্ধ করে দেন এবং গাড়ির দরজা লক করে দেন। এরপর গাড়ি উত্তরার দিয়াবাড়ি, বেড়িবাঁধ হয়ে সাভারের হেমায়েতপুর এলাকায় নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়।
দুপুরের দিকে চালক গাড়ি ঘুরিয়ে ঢাকার বিভিন্ন এলাকা ঘুরে পরিকল্পনা কমিশনের সামনে নিয়ে আসেন। এর আগে সাবেক বাণিজ্য মেলার মাঠে গাড়ি থামিয়ে চালক তার মায়ের চিকিৎসার কথা বলে ৬ লাখ টাকা দাবি করেন এবং তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে ৫০ হাজার টাকা চান।
মাকসুদা হোসেন জানান, তিনি বলেন যে এই মুহূর্তে তার কাছে টাকা নেই, অফিসে গেলে ব্যবস্থা করা যাবে। এরপর চালক তাকে কমিশনের ভেতরে নিয়ে গেলে সেখানে উপস্থিত আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনী চালককে আটক করে।
পরে তাকে শেরেবাংলা নগর থানায় হস্তান্তর করা হয়। থানার ওসি মনিরুল ইসলাম জানান, চালকের বিরুদ্ধে অপহরণের মামলা দায়েরের প্রস্তুতি চলছে।
পরিকল্পনা বিভাগের সচিব শাকিল আখতার বলেন, চালক মাদকাসক্ত বলে প্রাথমিকভাবে জানা গেছে এবং ভয়ভীতি দেখিয়ে টাকা আদায়ের চেষ্টা করেছিলেন। তার বিরুদ্ধে আইনানুগ ব্যবস্থা নিতে পুলিশকে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
