Dhaka’s Deadly Roads: 219 Fatalities in 2025 as Nighttime Accidents Surge
DHAKA — A grim annual report from the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has revealed that 219 people lost their lives in 409 road accidents across Dhaka in 2025.
The data paints a worrying picture of the capital's traffic safety, with over 500 others left injured due to systemic mismanagement.
According to the RSF press statement, men remain the most vulnerable, comprising over 80% of the deceased. Pedestrians and motorcycle riders together account for a staggering 90% of the total death toll, highlighting a critical lack of safety infrastructure for those outside of passenger cars.
The analysis specifically points to the "deadly hours" between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. In the absence of bypass roads, heavy trucks and tankers enter the city at high speeds, contributing to the fact that 42% of all crashes occur at night.
Accident Hotspots Identified:
Jatrabari & Demra
Mohammadpur
Airport Road & Kuril Bishwa Road
The RSF has called for 14 urgent reforms, including the immediate removal of vehicles past their economic lifespan and a transition to company-managed bus services to curb reckless competition.
