Brasília, 15 Sept 2025 — The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Dr. Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, is currently in Brazil at the invitation of Justice Antonio Herman Benjamin, Chief Justice of the National High Court of Brazil [Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ)].
He is attending a programme on judicial reforms, environmental justice, judicial independence, and technological innovation in court administration.
On Monday, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh visited the STJ in Brasília and held a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two judiciaries, with special emphasis on digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the role of courts in upholding the rule of law.
Both sides stressed that in today’s interconnected world, judicial collaboration is essential to addressing complex legal challenges across borders. They agreed to enhance mutual exchanges, particularly in areas of e-filing, digital case management, video conferencing, and online dispute resolution.
Justice Benjamin assured that Brazil would extend full cooperation to Bangladesh in modernizing its court system.
The two Chief Justices also explored the integration of AI in justice delivery, including AI-powered case management systems and legal research tools, while emphasizing responsible use to ensure accountability and fairness.
Another key area of discussion was the possibility of introducing a citizen-centered grievance redressal mechanism in Bangladesh, modeled after Brazil’s system of Judicial Ombudsmen.
Earlier this year, Justice Benjamin visited Dhaka to attend a seminar on environmental justice hosted by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
The ongoing exchange of visits is seen as a major step in deepening judicial ties between the two nations.
The Chief Justice of Bangladesh will remain in Brazil until 19 September 2025 and is scheduled to take part in several more programmes aimed at promoting judicial cooperation.
