Six people were injured in a gas explosion caused by a pipeline leak in Ashulia, Savar—an area on the outskirts of the capital.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the house of Jewel Ahmed, located near Mondol Market in the Nishchintopur area of Badhier Paar. The explosion severely damaged the two-storey building owned by Jewel Ahmed.
The injured have been identified as Jahanara (40), Jewel (24), Shanto (21), Hawya Akhtar (23), Johurul Islam (26), and Nasir (38). While Nasir was discharged after receiving primary treatment, the others remain hospitalized with burn injuries. Two of them are reportedly in critical condition.
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion from the second floor of the building, after which six people were found injured. They were quickly rescued and admitted to the local Women and Children Hospital.
Shamim Mia, the manager of Jewel Ahmed’s house, said that there was a gas leak in the room of a ground-floor tenant, Johurul Islam. Since all windows and doors were shut overnight, gas accumulated inside the room. Around 7:15 am, as soon as the stove was lit for cooking, a powerful explosion occurred, causing parts of the house to collapse. The blast was so intense that even the windows of nearby buildings were shattered.
The Fire Service and police visited the site and have launched an investigation into the incident.
