US and Israel Launch Coordinated Strikes on Iran; Explosions Rock Tehran (See Live Updates in the Slider Below)

The United States and Israel have carried out coordinated military strikes on Iran, with powerful explosions reported in Tehran and several other parts of the country on Saturday.

Missile impacts were reported in central areas of the capital, including University Street and the Jomhouri district. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising above the skyline, while residents in multiple neighbourhoods described hearing loud blasts.

Iranian media outlets also reported explosions in the northern Seyyed Khandan area of Tehran, as well as in western Ilam province, suggesting the operation extended beyond the capital.

A US official confirmed that the assault was conducted jointly by American and Israeli forces. According to the official, the strikes were launched by air and sea, as Washington has recently increased its military presence in the region, deploying fighter aircraft and naval assets amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said the operation aimed to eliminate threats to the country’s security. Israeli authorities later declared a state of emergency as sirens sounded across parts of Israel. The military issued alerts warning citizens to prepare for the possibility of retaliatory missile fire.

One of the reported targets in Tehran was located near offices linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. International media outlets cited officials as saying Khamenei was not in the capital at the time and had been moved to a secure location.

In Tehran, communications disruptions were reported, with cellphone networks in several districts temporarily inaccessible, complicating efforts to assess the full scale of damage or casualties.

An Iranian official was quoted by international agencies as saying Tehran is preparing a severe response. While details remain unclear, officials indicated retaliation could follow swiftly.

The escalating confrontation has triggered immediate regional repercussions. Israel closed its airspace to civilian flights, and authorities urged the public to avoid airports.

Iraq’s transport ministry announced the suspension of its national airspace operations. The US Embassy in Qatar instructed its staff to shelter in place and advised American citizens in the country to take similar precautions until further notice.

According to an Israeli defence source cited by news agencies, preparations for the strikes had been underway for months, with the timing finalised weeks ago, even as diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran continued.

Regional analysts say the latest developments could severely undermine ongoing negotiations related to Iran’s nuclear programme and risk pushing the region toward a broader conflict.

US–Israel Strike on Iran: Major Military Escalation

The United States and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes inside Iran, targeting leadership compounds, military command centers and strategic security sites in Tehran and other regions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed there are “growing signs” that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may no longer be operational, though Iranian authorities have not confirmed this. Reports from regional sources suggest senior commanders and possibly a nuclear-related scientist were killed, but official verification remains pending.

    Leadership and Strategic Facilities Targeted

    • Strikes reportedly hit areas linked to senior political and military leadership gatherings.
    • Command, intelligence and security infrastructure were described as primary objectives.
    • Iran has not confirmed reports about the deaths of top officials or nuclear-linked personnel.
    • Netanyahu stated operations would continue “as long as necessary” to neutralize strategic threats.

    School Strike: Civilian Casualties Reported

    • An airstrike reportedly hit a girls’ elementary school in Minab, Hormozgan province.
    • Iranian state-linked media reported a high death toll, mostly children, though figures remain independently unverified.
    • Dozens were reported injured as emergency teams continued rescue operations.
    • International humanitarian groups called for immediate protection of civilians.

    Regional Retaliation by Iran

    • Iran launched missile and drone strikes toward foreign military installations in the wider region.
    • Explosions and interceptions were reported in parts of the Gulf, including the UAE, Kuwait and Iraq.
    • Air defense systems were activated across several countries.
    • Some airports and airspaces were temporarily restricted due to security concerns.

    Global Reaction and Strategic Concerns

    • The United Nations urged restraint and an immediate return to diplomatic dialogue.
    • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed defensive air operations involving British assets in the region.
    • US President Donald Trump described the strikes as major combat action and suggested political change could emerge within Iran.
    • Energy markets reacted sharply amid fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.
    • Analysts warn the situation risks expanding into a broader regional conflict.
