Trump Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Image of Himself as Pope

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from Catholic groups and political figures after sharing an AI-generated image depicting himself dressed as the Pope.
The post appeared on official White House social media channels just days after the death of Pope Francis on April 21, prompting accusations of insensitivity.
The image, which shows Trump in papal attire with a solemn expression, was met with strong condemnation from the New York State Catholic Conference.
“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis… Do not mock us,” the group wrote on X.
Italian ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi also condemned the post, calling it disrespectful to both the Church and its followers.
Trump, who recently joked about wanting to be Pope, has denied any intention to offend.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the post, saying Trump had traveled to Italy to attend the late Pope’s funeral and remains committed to supporting Catholics and religious freedom.
Vatican officials declined to comment, as preparations are underway for the upcoming conclave to elect the next pontiff.
