Severe Winter Storm Freezes US Travel, Leaves Millions Stranded
A powerful and historic winter storm has hammered the eastern United States, bringing record-breaking snowfall, travel bans and severe flight disruptions that have left millions scrambling and airports in disarray.
The storm, which meteorologists are calling one of the most intense of the winter season, unleashed heavy snow, howling winds and blizzard conditions from North Carolina up through Maine, prompting widespread cancellations and travel restrictions.
Massive Flight Cancellations and Travel Bans
According to aviation trackers and reports, more than 5,000 flights were grounded or cancelled across the United States on Monday alone. These disruptions affected both domestic and international departures and arrivals at major hubs including New York’s JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports, Boston Logan, and other airports across the northeastern corridor.
Several states and cities, including New York City, responded by issuing travel bans for non-essential road travel as officials struggled to clear highways and halt additional accidents.
Snowfall Totals and Power Outages
Parts of the northeast were buried under feet of snow. Reports indicate that regions of Rhode Island and Massachusetts recorded more than two to three feet of snow, while New York’s Central Park documented nearly 20 inches in a single storm cycle.
The severe weather also caused widespread power outages, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity as utility crews raced to restore service amid ongoing snowfall.
Impact on Commuters and Residents
The storm’s impact has been far–reaching:
- Public transportation systems such as commuter rail and bus services faced delays or were temporarily suspended.
- Schools and businesses closed their doors as accumulation made travel unsafe and conditions deteriorated.
- Travelers stranded at airports reported long waits and scarce rebooking options, while airlines scrambled to accommodate passengers amid the chaos.
Authorities warned that continued snowfall and shifting wind conditions may prolong disruptions for days, urging residents and travelers to check flight statuses and remain vigilant.
