Protests Against Alleged Plot to Shut Magura Medical College

Residents and students in Magura have staged a human chain and rally protesting against an alleged ‘attempt’ to shut down Magura Government Medical College and demanding the swift establishment of a permanent campus.

The demonstration took place on the Magura-Dhaka highway in front of the medical college on March 4, 2025.

Speakers at the protest included district Jamaat Amir MB Baker, district BNP Joint Conveners Akhtar Hossain and Aminur Rahman Khan Pikul, former superintendent of Magura 250-Bed Hospital Dr. Sushanta Kumar Biswas, Magura BMA President Prof. Dr. Alimuzzaman, Magura Press Club President Prof. Saidur Rahman, district Swechasebak Dal Convener Golam Zahid, Member Secretary Abdur Rahim, district Chamber of Commerce Convener Humayun Kabir Raja, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Convener Engineer Selim Hossain, Member Secretary Md. Hussain, district Folk Cultural Center General Secretary Humayun Ibne Babar, Magura Medical College intern doctor Maliha Mourin Mahin, and final-year student Naimul Hossain.

Representatives from various political, social, cultural organizations, and educational institutions also addressed the gathering.

During the event, a mass signature campaign was launched to save Magura Medical College.

After the human chain and rally, a meeting was held at the Magura Press Club auditorium to form a committee dedicated to preserving the medical college.

Speakers at the rally accused a vested interest group of conspiring to shut down the college, a move they said the people of Magura would never accept.

They declared that the protest would continue until a permanent campus for the medical college is established.

They further emphasized that Magura Government Medical College has been operating for the past seven years, with one batch already completing the MBBS program and currently serving as intern doctors.

The speakers condemned the alleged conspiracy as a direct attack on the educational future of Magura and vowed to resist any attempts to shut down the institution.

The protesters called on the authorities to expedite the construction of a permanent campus to ensure a stable and conducive learning environment for the students.
