Massive Manhunt Underway in Ohio After 12 Wounded in Festival Shooting
TOLEDO, Ohio — Authorities have launched an intensive search for multiple suspects following a chaotic mass shooting that left at least 12 people injured near a popular community festival on Saturday evening.
The gunfire erupted at approximately 5:37 p.m. local time near the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Robinwood Avenue, close to the annual Old West End Festival.
The neighborhood celebration, known as the official kickoff to Toledo’s summer festival season, was packed with families and attendees enjoying live music and food markets when the violence began.
Sudden Violence Disrupts Community Event
According to Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan, preliminary investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from an altercation between at least two individuals who drew firearms and began shooting at one another.
The sudden volley of bullets caught hundreds of bystanders in the crossfire, sending terrified crowds running for cover and diving to the ground at the nearby Agnes Reynolds Jackson Arboretum.
"Twelve people being shot, that's the most I've been to a scene," said Toledo Police Lt. Dan Gerken, expressing shock at the scale of the violence. "I've been to a lot of scenes, but this is way over the top."
Casualties and Emergency Response
First responders quickly flooded the area, treating the wounded across the grassy sections of the historic district. The victims span a wide demographic, ranging in age from 14 to 61, though authorities noted the majority are individuals in their early 20s.
Medical officials confirmed the baseline status of those affected:
Stable Condition: 10 victims are currently receiving treatment and remain stable.
Critical Condition: 2 victims suffered severe injuries and remain in critical condition.
Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz stated that despite the severity of the incident, all 12 victims are currently expected to survive.
An eyewitness and U.S. Navy veteran with medical training, Kevin Berry, recounted hitting the deck as the shots rang out.
State Leadership Responds
The shooting has drawn condemnation from top state officials.
"Summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence," Governor DeWine stated, adding that he maintains full confidence in local law enforcement's ability to track down those responsible.
The Toledo Police Department is actively reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing cellphone videos captured by bystanders, and interviewing witnesses.
