Iran’s Attempted Strike on Diego Garcia Fails, UK Condemns “Reckless” Actions

Iran’s Attempted Strike on Diego Garcia Fails, UK Condemns “Reckless” Actions

An attempted missile strike by Iran targeting the strategically important Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean has failed, according to reports confirmed by officials familiar with the situation.

The remote island, which hosts a joint US-UK airbase, was reportedly targeted with two ballistic missiles. However, neither reached its destination. One missile is believed to have failed during flight, while the other was intercepted by a US naval warship.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence strongly criticised Tehran’s actions, describing them as “reckless attacks” that reflect growing instability across the region. Officials warned that such actions pose a threat to British interests and allied security.

Although the US military has not issued an official statement, sources suggest the attempted strike took place before the UK expanded its cooperation with the US to counter Iranian threats in the Strait of Hormuz.

There are questions over whether Iran has the capability to strike a target as far as Diego Garcia, which is located about 2,350 miles from its territory. While most of Iran’s known missile systems have shorter ranges, some analysts believe advanced variants could potentially reach greater distances.

Diego Garcia remains a key strategic base for Western military operations. Its location allows long-range bombers to operate across the Middle East, making it a vital asset in ongoing security efforts.

The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, with Iran reportedly launching attacks on locations hosting US forces and continuing its confrontation with Israel. The situation has heightened concerns over global energy security, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil shipments.

Meanwhile, political debate has intensified in the UK over its role in the conflict. Some leaders have called for parliamentary approval on allowing US forces to use British bases, while the government maintains that the decision is necessary for collective defence.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to hold an emergency meeting to assess the security situation and the potential economic impact, especially as energy prices face upward pressure.

The Chagos Islands, where Diego Garcia is located, remain under British control, although there are plans to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while retaining military access through a long-term agreement.
