Battery-run rickshaws are set to be banned from operating on the main roads of Dhaka city, according to an announcement by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz.
The decision aims to enhance road safety and bring order to the city’s often chaotic traffic system.
The announcement came during a meeting held on Tuesday at the DNCC office in Gulshan, titled “Progress and Future Measures on Developing Standard Models and Prototypes of Battery-Run Rickshaws (E-Rickshaws).”
The administrator stated that only standard-model, officially approved battery-powered rickshaws would be allowed to operate within neighborhood alleys and residential lanes, not on major thoroughfares.
Despite this decision, battery-powered three-wheelers and easybikes continue to run rampant across various areas of Dhaka. In places like Mirpur 10, Badda, Rampura, and Kuril Bishwa Road, these vehicles are seen operating not only on main roads but also in the wrong and opposite directions—posing significant safety hazards.
A particularly risky situation has emerged on the 300-foot road near Bashundhara Residential Area, where road digging has narrowed the space. Battery-run easybikes traveling against traffic on this stretch have made the road increasingly prone to accidents. Yet, enforcement appears lacking, and public disregard for the rules remains high.
While the DNCC’s announcement marks a policy shift, the real test lies in implementation. Without effective enforcement, the presence of these unauthorized vehicles will likely continue to undermine urban traffic safety.
