The legal proceedings in the Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan stabbing case have taken a new turn after Mohammad Shariful Islam, the Bangladeshi national accused in the attack, reportedly asked the court for permission to plead guilty.
According to PTI, Islam submitted an application expressing his willingness to accept the charges. His lawyer, Vipul Dushing, also confirmed the development and said the accused had requested leniency from the court.
Court Seeks Prosecution Response
Islam, who has remained in judicial custody since his arrest, made the application shortly after charges were formally framed against him. The court has asked the prosecution to respond to his request and has scheduled the next hearing for September 11.
The accused faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to robbery involving a deadly weapon, causing grievous injury and trespassing. Additional charges have also been brought under India's immigration-related laws.
Attack on Saif Ali Khan
The incident took place on January 16, 2025, when an intruder entered Saif Ali Khan's 12th-floor apartment in Bandra and attacked the actor with a knife.
Khan suffered multiple stab wounds and underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. He was discharged five days later.
The actor has since spoken publicly about the frightening experience, saying he believed he could die during the attack. He also indicated that he could forgive the accused for his actions but found the alleged attempt on his life difficult to forget.
Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan is preparing for his next film, Haiwaan, alongside Akshay Kumar. Directed by Priyadarshan, the movie is scheduled for theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
