Bangladesh is preparing to open the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on December 16, as the government moves to expand the country’s aviation capacity and improve international connectivity.

At the same time, authorities are working to launch a direct air service between Dhaka and New York next year. Biman Bangladesh Airlines is also expected to strengthen its fleet by adding 10 leased aircraft in the near future.

The plans were announced by newly appointed Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat during a meeting with ministry officials at the Secretariat on Sunday.

The minister said preparations for the third terminal’s soft opening are already underway. The government is also expected to sign an agreement with a Japanese company in September for the management and operation of the facility.

The new terminal is expected to significantly increase the airport’s passenger and flight-handling capacity. Officials hope it will help address the pressure on the existing facilities and improve the overall experience for international travelers.

Direct Dhaka-New York Service in the Works

The government is also looking to establish a direct flight connection between Dhaka and New York in 2027.

According to the minister, work on the initiative has already begun. A nonstop service would provide a major convenience for Bangladeshi expatriates, business travelers and other passengers by reducing the need for lengthy transit stops in third countries.

The new route could also strengthen aviation and economic links between Bangladesh and the United States.

Biman Plans to Expand Fleet

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is preparing for a major expansion of its fleet, with 10 leased aircraft expected to be added soon.

The additional planes could help the national carrier increase the frequency of flights on existing routes while also creating room for the airline to explore new international destinations.

The minister said he expects the leased aircraft to join Biman’s fleet shortly.

Minister Plans Direct Oversight

Improving coordination among the ministry and agencies under its authority will also be a key priority, Millat said.

To accelerate work and improve supervision, he plans to spend one day each week at either Civil Aviation or Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The government expects the combined initiatives—including the third terminal, fleet expansion and new international routes—to strengthen Bangladesh’s aviation sector and improve services for passengers.
